For Parents

Think About Safe Working Conditions for Your Child
As a parent, you want to give your child the opportunity to grow and develop. Sending teenagers abroad to work may seem like a valuable opportunity to gain experience and independence.

Unfortunately, this dream has another side, one that we witnessed firsthand while working at Langley.

We, a collective of former Langley employees, want to raise awareness about the dangers many young people, especially teenagers, may face while working for Langley. We witnessed a working environment where young people were exploited, where wages were not paid properly, where unreasonable deductions were made for accommodation, and where insurance failed to cover workplace accidents.

Most disturbing of all were the cases of sexual harassment that occurred, yet were ignored and silenced. This is something Langley should have taken with the utmost seriousness, but that did not happen.
Why Young People Are Especially Vulnerable
Young, inexperienced, and trusting people are particularly vulnerable and can easily become targets of this kind of exploitation.

Many young employees do not know how to respond. They follow along, accept what they are given, and hope that their efforts will be appreciated and recognized. Sadly, the reality is often very different.

When you are young and eager to prove yourself, it is easy to end up in a situation where you do not feel able to stand up for your rights. That is exactly where we witnessed many cases of injustice that deeply affected employees.
What We Want Parents to Understand
We want parents to be aware of the risks their children may face when taking jobs at Langley.

We urge parents to be proactive and thoroughly investigate an employer before allowing their children to go abroad, especially when the work is in another country. Based on what we have seen, we do not recommend that anyone work for Langley, and especially not young people.

For a teenager, it can be difficult to recognize warning signs and abuse. As a parent, you can be their safety net.
Why We Are Speaking Out
We want to bring this information to the wider public in order to prevent more young people from ending up in the same situations.

If your child has worked at Langley and had a negative experience, or if you suspect they may be at risk, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We want to help bring these issues to light and work for change, for the sake of all young people.
